Opting for Life

As I said in last week's reflection, on the first day of the year there is among other things always some reference to the Prayer for Peace where hopefully we ask that in the new year we are beginning Peace may actually be found. Now at this year's beginning I want to express my hope that this also may be a year in which we don't cease working for the defense of Life, this precious gift which was given to us and which does not belong to us, hence everything we omit doing in order to defend it turns against it.

We are at the beginning of a new year, and as I said in last week's reflection, on the first day of the year there is among other things always some reference to the Prayer for Peace where hopefully we ask that in the new year we are beginning Peace may actually be found.

Now at this year's beginning I want to express my hope that this also may be a year in which we don't cease working for the defense of Life, that it may be a year in which once and for all we opt for Life, this life threatened by attitudes of scorn, by many selfish searches for contentment, by many ideologies by which some try to convince us that in order to belong to modern and progressive societies we must obtain laws which pass judgement on when life starts or ends.

Life, this precious gift which was given to us and which does not belong to us, hence everything we omit doing in order to defend it turns against it.

We don't opt for life and its defense when we allow to be talked into expressions or ideologies which in short just want to impose attitudes whose only purpose is to favor man doing things at his own “wish”, pretending to decide for others with laws which allow abortion whenever they will, under the falso concept of “owning their bodies” while all of our life, of which the body is just a part, is a gift we have been given, not to even mention it when there already is another, different, unique life.

We don't opt for life when as a society we don't care about creating the necessary conditions so that everybody, starting in early childhood can fully develop and live according to every stage; thus when a child needs to be on the street looking for how to “survive” whithout play and without studying as it fits him, we are not fully opting for life.

As a society we don't opt life when we don't demand that minimal conditions are met in order for all to have access to a health system, and health doesn't just mean “healing” whatever is sick, but it also means prevention.

Whenever we don't attend our elders or we do not create conditions so that those with a handicap on any capability may develop fully as a human being, we are not opting for life.

In short, the option for life must be something of which everyone of us is convinced and to which we all have a commitment, trying to create conditions so we and those around us can find the minimal conditions needed to develop life, and also demanding from those who have the responsiblity of common good to give priority ot Life, to any Life, from its very beginning, that is, when it was begotten.
