Uncovering what's insideEducation is not so much “adding” things from the outside, but helping to discover what's in the inside. As a matter of fact the term education derives from the Latin term “educere”, which means precisely that: “taking out from the inside”. What a wonderful feeling it is when adults, both parents and educators, realize that what we call teaching is no other thing than helping children and young people in discovering that what they already have in their inside, teaching them to “put it in the light outside”. The educator is a “sculptor” who aids in uncovering what's in the inside putting away with that what there is in excess, he is not a “painter” who adds colors from the outside.Once I read a short story: a child, being a neighbor of a sculpturing art studio, one day entered the place where one of the sculptors was at work and saw there was a huge stone block. Some time late the child went back to this place, and the stone block had become the statue of a horse. The child looked at the sculptor and asked "How did you know there was a horse inside that block? The question may seem funny but actually it is just the truth, the horse was already inside the stone block, the sculptor's work consisted in “removing” every excess around it, giving it the shape of a horse. This has been the sculptor's great skill, removing what is out of place so later on the shape of a horse could be seen, he didn't add anything from the outside but just removed what “prevented” seeing the horse. Well, I make this introduction in order to refer to the education we often impart, which I think is just that, “uncovering” what's inside and helping the other person from an early age up to discover what he or she is. Education is not so much “adding” things from the outside, but helping to discover what's in the inside. Therefore it is important to pay attention to the capabilities each person has, without pretending that children resemble this one or that one, or putting them to develop the “frustrated vocation” which their parents often bear. Children must not “resemble” anyone, in any case they must be faithful to themselves, what is called “fulfilling oneself”, discovering their Vocation, their “place” in life, through the gifts God gave them. Human fulfilling does not mean “copying” some very good thing from others, since they may be good but “belong to others”, and this is what educators, beginning with the parents, the “first” people in charge of the education of their children always must keep in mind. The educator is a “sculptor” who aids in uncovering what's in the inside putting away with that what there is in excess, he is not a “painter” who adds colors from the outside. The task of a good parent, a good educator, is to notice the wonderful statue in a child's inside, and help to bring it out to the light.
