Let's not pass by

There's a story in the Gospel which always drew my special attention, which is when Jesus cures Bartimaeus, a blind man sitting at the wayside asking for alms who, when he heard Jesus was going to walk by, started to shout for help. At last Jesus worked a miracle which made Bartimaeus see again. However, the scene makes me reflect as each of us can make some reflections about this story, looking for the place we choose to stay, being many times in need of Jesus who walks by, even “shouting” so He hears us and stops walking by, while others we may be the ones who aid others in meeting the Lord, and perhaps many times we are the means by which the Lord can meet our brothers and sisters in need as He walks by.

However, the scene makes me reflect.

In the first place, surely this man sat at the wayside every day asking for help. His steadiness, his being there day by day made him be present at what probably was the only time Jesus went there, and thus he was able to be cured from his blindness.

On the other hand, says the Gospel, those around him tried to “tell him to be quiet” in order not to bother Jesus but he shouted all the more. If he had not insisted, if he had complied with those who wanted him to shut up, he probably wouldn't have drawn Jesus' attention and wouldn't have got any benefit.

These attitudes always make me think about how many times we may have lost God's “benefits” because of our poor steadiness, perhaps because we feel it is hard doing the same thing every day, repeating our same prayers or pious rites which may look empty to us, which may not “fill” us, we don't know how to “wait” at the wayside although at any given moment the Lord may “pass by” our lives. We must pay attention, must listen to his steps and if necessary we must “draw His attention”.

How many times “voices from around us” try to make us shut up, try to make us “stay put”, try to refrain us from “shouting”, either for fear, shame, “fear of man”, and we are deprived of so many benefits because we do not know how to “insist”.

My thought goes to the number of times we stop others from meeting the Lord, because we are the kind of people who stay at the wayside and just see the Lord pass by, and if anyone calls out or wants to approach Him we become obstacles so he “will not bother”, so he doesn't make us leave our “ease” which makes us just look at those who pass by, including Jesus Himself.

Surely each of us can make some reflections about this story, looking for the place we choose to stay, being many times in need of Jesus who walks by, even “shouting” so He hears us and stops walking by, while others we may be the ones who aid others in meeting the Lord, and perhaps many times we are the means by which the Lord can meet our brothers and sisters in need as He walks by.

Don't let us become obstacles, don't let us stop imploring the Lord to assist us with our wounds and sicknesses, and among all other things, let's not “pass by” in front of someone who at the wayside waits for Jesus or someone else on His behalf to approach him and bring His help.
