A time of joy and conversionJust as John the Baptist prepared the people of Israel for the coming of the Messiah by inviting them to be joyous ant to convert their lives, as Church we are called to do the same job. We must show the world that the coming of Christmas generates something different, something that will fill us with joy since the Salvation offered by God to all men by sending His Son which is God made man is “for the joy of our hearts”. Our joy does not just reside in Christmas being near, but also in the invitation made to us to be conveyors of this joy of salvation. In short, a time to draw the balance, a time to prepare Jesus' coming, a time which without any doubt should make us reflect on which attitudes need to be changed, in the knowledge that therefore we will experience the salvation we all need, and thus experience the joy of “renewing all things and our whole life” which Christmas brings. We are transiting the time of preparation for Christmas, which also coincides with the last moments of the year, and as always in these days we listen to proposals of making a so-called “personal balance” of the year. It is true, it is a time to draw the balance, either on personal, group or institutional level, etc. The Church invites us at this time to convey hope and joy as we prepare to once again experience the presence of our Saviour among us. As Church we are appointed to announce this salvation, and this appointment in itself is a reason for joy and also an invitation to “convert” in order to make this salvating presence a reality. Our joy does not just reside in Christmas being near, but also in the invitation made to us to be conveyors of this joy of salvation. Just as John the Baptist prepared the people of Israel for the coming of the Messiah by inviting them to be joyous ant to convert their lives, as Church we are called to do the same job. We must show the world that the coming of Christmas generates something different, something that will fill us with joy since the Salvation offered by God to all men by sending His Son which is God made man is “for the joy of our hearts”. Salvation offered to us by God by sending Jesus is not a salvation of some political or social kind, it is much deeper, it reaches the heart of Man and renews it in all his relationships: with himself, with others, with things, with God. Thus the proposal of preparing for this coming of salvation, and we must do so by reviewing our attitudes towards ourselves and others. Concretely, we must think if by chance we must not change some attitude in our families, where husband and wife may have put aside some attitudes which would help in avoiding the deterioration of their mariage. In the relation with our children maybe we should bother not just to “correct” them for their attitudes which often may be shallow, but try to keep them company, listen to them, show concern for what they are experiencing, for what really is going on with them, and to spend time with them. Perhaps at our job things are not as “straight” as they should be due to our fault, or maybe we treat those who share our job quite poorly. Perhaps we should be more honest, without concealing attitudes from the person who shares most with us, or from our brethren, our affections, or even from God Himself.
