True riches

At this time where we are shown that true happiness is related to what we “own”, to “consumer goods”, to riches, and where many people feel bad because they don't own more than they do, asking what are true riches seems fine to me. I think of the riches of having a friend, of not feeling lonely, and I think of those who have a secured material life but who have no one with whom they can seriously share a deep moment, a time which will not depend on something material. I think of how good some reading, listening to some good piece of music or sharing a few moments with those we love can make us. There are many kinds of “riches” which provide us true happiness, which are “almost for free” and we almost don't even realize they exist.

At this time where we are shown that true happiness is related to what we “own”, to “consumer goods”, to riches, and where many people feel bad because they don't own more than they do, asking what are true riches seems fine to me.

It is true there are many people who don't have the least to cover their bare necessities, and very near to us we see children who “are hungry” and bare-footed. Whole families don't have a roof over their head and don't know if they will have something to feed their children this evening. But I am not referring to life's bare necessities which nobody should miss, even more so in a country with so many resources where we continuosly hear that “State collection is improving”.

I refer to many of us who, while not being rich from a material point of view, are always trying to own much more, even those things for which they actually have no use, and this makes us see and value the different riches we own.

I think of the riches of having a friend, of not feeling lonely, and I think of those who have a secured material life but who have no one with whom they can seriously share a deep moment, a time which will not depend on something material.

I think of someone who helps us smile when we are sad, which doubtlessly is a big asset although we may not realize it.

Feeling understood and in good company is without a doubt an immense asset, and so is enjoying Nature for a while, those things God has put in our hands so we can enjoy instead of wasting them.

I think no large amount of money is needed in order to pat a child's head, and although it might ask us to hand over something material which perhaps we cannot give him we may have a gesture, a smile or a look which is for free... and how good makes it feel him and us.

I think of how good some reading, listening to some good piece of music or sharing a few moments with those we love can make us.

Don't let us be misled, let's not allow others to “convince” us and get us accustomed to the thought that true happiness lies in luxury and material things. This is what those who need “consumers” in order to generate whatever is in their own interest try to make us believe.

There are many kinds of “riches” which provide us true happiness, which are “almost for free” and we almost don't even realize they exist.
