I want to pray

Street kid sleeping in a wrecked railroad waggon.
Street kid sleeping in a wrecked railroad waggon.

I want to pray for the kids who smear their chocolate fingers on everything they touch, who jump on puddles and who destroy their new pants, who eat sweets before dinner and who never find their favorite sneakers in the morning.

I also want to pray for the children who look at photographers from behind barbed wires, who never have walked down the street with a pair of new sneakers, who never have played "as if charmed" and who were born in places we never would dare to approach, where they probably will end their lives.

I want to pray for the children who kiss us with some sweet sticky mess on their mouth, who give us flower brunches, who sleep with their dogs and who want to bury their goldfish; who give us a mighty hug and who forget the money for their snack; who scatter their tooth paste all over the bathroom, who watch their father with astonished eyes while he shaves and their mother while she does her make up, who make noise as they eat their soup.

And I also wish to pray for those kids who never have eaten dessert, who have no favorite blanket which they can carry everywhere, who see their suffering parents, who approach our cars on the street with begging eyes, who have no bathrooms where they can tidy themselves up, and whose pictures are shown at police stations instead of at their parent's office.

I want to pray for those children whose nightmares happen at full daylight, who eat whatever they find, who sleep under the open sky wrapping themselves up in newspapers, who never have been to the dentist, who have never been pampered by anybody, who go hungry to sleep and who wake up hungry, who have no address.

I want to pray for those kids who love it when they are carried and for those who need to be carried, for those who give up and for those who keep on fighting, for those who cannot find a hand to hold.

I want to pray today for all these children because all of them are of value, give us a new kind of love and a reason to live to our lives, because they make us feel the need of committing to build a fairer world.

And I pray for our children, those who have been born and those who will be, because they are the best hope for our world, the reward of our work, the realization of our unfinished dreams, the guarantee of our immortality, and the proof that God has not lost hope in man.

This day I ask for my children, for our children, for all the children in the world, may GOD bless them with love and joy.
