Charitable Works > Other Works founded by Felices los Niños > In Chacarita On September 15, 2006 these schools were transfered to the Archbishopric of Buenos Aires:Madre Maravillas de Jesús Kindergarten
At the very heart of the borough of Chacarita, in the City of Buenos Aires, Madre Maravillas de Jesús Kindergarten is one of the educational establishments of Felices los Niños Foundation. The Kindergarten opened its doors at the beginning of academic year in March 2002. Children attend full-day classes 5 days a week. The kindergarten has classrooms for 3 to 5 year-olds. While it has no state subsidy, the institution conforms to all relevant requirements set forth by the educational authorities. At Madre Maravillas de Jesús Kindergarten, curricular activities are developed in the morning and special activities take place in the afternoon. Every child is given breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack at the multi-purpose room, which acts as a dining hall when meals are served. Children take physical education classes as a special activity. They explore the world of movement and music with a music therapist. Their spiritual education is covered by the teaching of the catechism.
Teachers carry out a social containment task that goes beyond the regular teaching activities of other school educators. Hence the importance of having a qualified staff in charge of educating these kids. The Kindergarten's actual purpose has been to attract a population of children in a situation of extreme poverty who have not received any schooling before. Children attending the Madre Maravillas de Jesus Kindergarten come from the settlements in Chacarita and from the San Jose Obrero Home of Felices los Niños Foundation. The Kindergarten is one of the buildings included in the large premises of San Jose Obrero Residential School. These works were built thanks to an important donation from “Newman’s Own”, the foundation the legendary Paul Newman created to fund welfare projects the world over.

Santa Teresa de los Andes EGB School is located at the heart of the borough of Chacarita. It opened its doors at the beginning of the academic year, in March 2002. Children attend full-day classes 5 days a week. While Santa Teresa de los Andes School has no state subsidy, it conforms to all requirements set forth by the relevant educational authorities. The regular EGB curriculum is developed in the morning; in the afternoon, children carry out special activities, such as physical education classes, music with a music therapist, plastic arts, and remedial courses, a workshop where children improve their language and mathematics skills through games and play. Children are also taught catechism.
Teachers carry out a great social containment task that goes beyond the regular teaching activities of other school educators. A school concerned with integration demands professional competence, and different projects and activities. It is a place prepared for and concerned with the special needs of minors at social risk. Who attend Santa Teresa de los Andes School? Students of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of the 1st EGB Cycle (primary education). The 1st year of the 2nd EGB Cycle will open in 2004 as a result of natural growth. (The school grows at one course per year). Children attending the School come from San Jose Obrero Home of Felices los Niños Foundation and from the settlements and slums of Chacarita. The externs come mostly from El Playón settlement (900 Fraga St.), others come from a squat on Giribone St. (former Au 3), and there are also children of people who live in pensions paid for by the City of Buenos Aires. The children's parents are mostly cartoneros (people who collect cardboard in order to make a living) or peddlers and many mothers are house maids. Their children are often left alone -on the street- this is the reason they need a school like ours which provides them with breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, health, and double schooling. This prevents the kids from being on the street, it makes internation unnecessary, and besides from education they get social containment. These works were built thanks to an important donation from “Newman’s Own”, the foundation the legendary Paul Newman created to fund welfare projects the world over.
