Charitable Works > Rest of the Country – Poverty and School Attrition > In Chimbas, San Juan ![]() San Cayetano Day Care Center
FEATURES:At 5 km (about 3 mi) from San Juan’s capital city is the town of Chimbas, where the San Cayetano Day Care Center is located. The suburbs of the provincial capital, like all the other capital cities in the country, have been drawing waves of migrants coming from the province’s impoverished interior in search of better working and living conditions, an ideal they have not always succeeded in fulfilling. In the meantime, those most in need live in poverty, excluded from any possibility of advancement or of having access to education.
The San Cayetano Home provides assistance to children from infancy until 17 years old and to pregnant teenagers. They are given breakfast, lunch and a hearty afternoon tea. Apart from the study support they get during out-of-school hours, they participate in workshops on Handicrafts, Cooking, Pastry Making and Sports. This work of the Felices los Niños Foundation, started in April 2000, plays a significant social role within the town of Chimbas, and receives the support of its community. The main purpose of the Home is to prevent the widespread school attrition affecting the most destitute sectors of this town. The pastoral work conducted is supported by the nearby Nuestra Señora de Andacollo Parish Church.
