Sagrada Familia Day Care Center

FEATURES:

Since December 23^rd 1997, the Sagrada Familia Day Care Center has provided assistance to street children, especially those from the Cárcova and Independencia Slums, between 5 and 17 years old, who attend the center during out-of-school hours. Depending on the time of the day, they are given breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack.

Conscientious work is carried out among the families to get children out of begging and reintegrate them into school. Children attending the home participate in workshops on Children’s Rights, Solidarity (keeping close links with a special school and an old people’s home which they regularly visit), Handicrafts and Cooking. They also receive religious instruction and tend the vegetable garden.

The Sagrada Familia Home was created following a proposal by TBA, the railway concessionaire of the line where the José León Suárez station is located, just a few meters away from the Home.

Its nearness to the railway station encouraged the creation, on an adjacent site, of a shelter for the children of “cartoneros” – people whose job is to collect paper and cardboard discarded by stores and households in urban centers for sale and recycling. These workers, who are excluded from formal jobs, are forced to walk for hours on end to pick the items they sell afterwards. Without the San Francisco de Asís Maternal Home they would have to wander about in the streets with their children until the small hours.
