Buenos Aires Province – Exclusion and Abandonment

In December 1993, Father Julio Grassi created the Felices los Niños Foundation in the city of Hurlingham. The “Ciudad del Niño Don Bosco” is the Foundation’s headquarters, and it became the base for spreading work to other areas in Greater Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires city and the rest of the country.

The Foundation’s work in the province of Buenos Aires is distributed in a radial fashion, as it has followed the roads of poverty, a maze amidst the pathways opened by public transportation, especially the railway.

The urban rings around Buenos Aires city have been mushrooming unceasingly for decades, so that today Buenos Aires ranks among the 10 largest cities in the world. In such a conglomerate needs increase, and it is possible to feel the social exclusion and abandonment of those who need us most. In view of this, the Felices los Niños Foundation has felt committed to mitigate the growth of poverty and the more unstable social situation of the population in the province with more works.

60% of the children in the Province of Buenos Aires are poor or distressed

There are 10.2 million children under 14 in Argentina, 54.6% of which live in poor families. These figures grew in Posadas and Bahia Blanca.

There live 2.5 million children in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires of a total of 10.2 million in all of Argentina. Minors who live in a state of poverty in the Province of Buenos Aires amount to 60.5%, whereas the figure for the country's capital is 23.4%.

These data were provided by INDEC (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos, the Argentine federal office for statistics). The poll showed that in Argentina 5.6 million children live amid poor families. Half of them live in a state of distress.

These figures aim at the fact that six out of ten Argentine children ar poor or live in distress. This figure is larger than the corresponding one for adults, reported Hoy newspaper.

Poor families tend to have a larger number of children. Scarce resources need to be shared among too many. The growth of the number of minors under these circumstances is a reproducing factor for poverty due to cultural, educational, and work impact caused by being raised up in a limited resources environment.

Compared to 2003, poverty went down by 8.8 points since at that time figures showed 63,4%. However, they are still ten points above those of seven years ago.
