Charitable Works > Rest of the Country – Poverty and School Attrition > In Suncho Corral, Santiago del Estero Santa Rosa de Lima Home
FEATURES:Suncho Corral is some 100 km (about 62 mi) away from Santiago del Estero’s capital city and it has a population of 7,500 inhabitants. The Felices los Niños Foundation is present at the Santa Rosa de Lima Home for Siblings, built by the Bishopric of Añatuya, the poorest in Argentina. The home provides accommodation for children between 3 and 17 years old, mostly coming from the surrounding forested areas. It is situated in the Centro Settlement, very near the Padre José Ismael Murillo Sports Complex where the children practice sports and are given physical education. The Home features dorms, bathrooms with hot showers throughout the day, study room, video room, and multipurpose room, dining room and outbuildings. The furnishings and fixtures were donated by the Rotary Club from the town of Fernández, some 60 km (38 mi) away.
The main purpose of the Santa Rosa de Lima Home is to ensure the schooling of the children who otherwise would not be able to complete their education (due to several factors – costs, long distances from the schools, because they would be forced to move into other towns and live alone at boardinghouses, lack of transportation or roads that may facilitate their daily trips to school, lack of electric power, gas and the basic items needed to study, etc.). Those children who are unable to complete their education are doomed since early childhood to work chopping wood, making bricks, raising animals or making charcoal. The forest in Santiago del Estero is infested with snakes, scorpions, pumas and wild boar, and many children and their families live there in tents. The Parish priest Father Alberto Moresco, from the San Miguel Arcángel Parish Church, where children go to mass every day, together with Mgr. Antonio Baseotto, the then Bishop of Añatuya, contacted Father Julio Grassi with the idea of starting work with the poorest of the poor children, way back in April 2002. One month later, on Friend’s day, July 20th 2002, the first missionaries from the Foundation arrived. They were teenagers accompanied by Dora and Daniel Greppi. Just a few days later, on July 25th, Mgr. Baseotto and Father Grassi inaugurated the Home.
The children go to school at Suncho Corral in the morning, and teachers give them remedial courses. After lunch at the Home, they receive study support in all subjects. They also participate in workshops on Handicrafts, Vegetable Garden Tending and Gardening, Dancing, Physical Education and Educational Reading. The facilities and services offered at the Santa Rosa de Lima Home are unique in the province of Santiago del Estero, but the Home really stands apart for the friendliness of the staff in charge of the children. Also at Suncho Corral a Day Care Center is under construction, at a site donated by the Municipality, situated in the Norte Settlement, between the Rivadavia, Salta, Moreno and Gaucho Rivero streets.
